American Idol 2011: New Judges Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez & Randy Jackson Debut

American Idol season 11 episode 1 premiered on the Fox network this evening and in case you were unaware of it, there are some big changes this season.

This year there are two new judges who are J.Lo aka Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler (joined by returning “music expert” Randy Jackson) who took on the first audition held in New Jersey and New York.

In the first installment of the show we realized that we will really miss Simon Cowell and his meanness because all of the potential singers were offered a quick ticket to Hollywood.

Thousands of wannabes took the stage in hopes of making it into the Top 24 and go directly to a Top 12 (or 15 – Producers are still deciding) and eventually win the reality series.

This new season is a bit different than the previous ones – the contestants will be living together in an “idol” mansion, will have the opportunity to sing original songs and can even make their own music videos.

And when it comes to the theme of the week, Interscope / Geffen / A & M music executive Jimmy Iovine, who will help mentor the future singers explained “We will not ask a country singer to sing a song by an R & B singer “.He added “If the subject is 80 or Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, each song can be customized for the competitor.”

Here are few standouts from the first audition:

Devyn Rush singing God Bless the Child:

Devyn Rush is a waitress who can win American Idol.

This week we also met Travis Orlando who sang Eleanor Rigby and Jason Mraz’s I’m Yours.

Orlando had a very compelling story and impressive voice.

Melinda Ademi “If I Ain’t Got You” :

It was a very emotional audition from Melinda originally from Kosovo who gave a heartfelt rendition of Alicia Keys’ “If I Ain’t Got You”.

Ashley Sullivan “Gimme Gimme”:
Sullivan is crazily in love with Britney Spears and has a picture of the star with her everywhere she goes.
Randy was able to make sense out of nonsense and told her no but J. Lo and Steven think they can pull her out of her freaky world.

So what are your thoughts on the first episode of Idol? What do you think of the new judges? Do you miss Simon?
