Keith Olbermann Fired? Countdown Host Ends Show, Leaving MSNBC

Countdown with Keith Olbermann which was hosted by Keith Olbermann began in 2003 and has official ended today January 21st 2011.

The controversial left leaning political commentator and writer shocked the rest of the media and his viewers by announcing that it was his last show this evening.

MSNBC’s president Phil Griffin, did not really explain the reason why he terminated Olbermann’s contract after eight years but he did release a brief statement confirming the departure and thanking him for his work on the network.

The press release read:

MSNBC and Keith Olbermann have ended their contract. The last broadcast of “Countdown with Keith Olbermann” will be this evening. MSNBC thanks Keith for his integral role in MSNBC’s success and we wish him well in his future endeavors.

The very liberal TV personality revealed that he was leaving “Countdown” midway through the episode which he concluded by reading an excerpt from James Thurber. But before signing off for the last time he told his supporters:

There were many occasions, particularly in the last two-and-a-half years, where all that surrounded the show–but never the show itself–was just too much for me. But your support and loyalty and, if I may use the word, insistence, ultimately required me to keep going. My gratitude to you is boundless and if you think I’ve done any good here, imagine how it looked from this end…this may be the only television program wherein the host was much more in awe of the audience than vice versa.

Olbermann made headlines recently after he was suspended without pay for two days when it was discovered that he had donated money to three Democratic candidates during the November mid term election without his boss’ authorization.

You can watch his goodbye speech above.
